From Hallmark Shelves to AI Solutions: My Journey Back to Helping Small Business
Remembering the Jingle of the Door
Some memories stick with you. For me, it’s the faint scent of potpourri and paper, the precise way greeting cards had to be stocked, and the gentle jingle of the bell above the door at my father’s Hallmark store. As a teenager in the 80's, my after-school hours were spent navigating the aisles, helping customers find the perfect gift wrap, and ensuring the Hummel figurines were dust-free.
It was honest work, and I saw firsthand the dedication, the long hours, and the constant juggling act that running a small business demands. My dad poured his heart into those stores. But if I’m being completely honest, while a part of me understood the rhythm of retail, another part was itching to get home.
The Glow of the Tandy 1000
Waiting for me there was a portal to another world: our family’s Tandy 1000 computer. While my friends might have been focused on games, I was captivated by something else – the potential hiding behind its blinking cursor. I’d recently discovered BASIC programming language, devouring manuals and experimenting line by painstaking line.
I remember the absolute thrill, the jolt of pure satisfaction, the first time I successfully typed 10 PRINT "Hello World" and saw those words appear on the monochrome screen. It felt like magic. It was creation. In that moment, I wasn’t just stocking shelves; I was telling a machine what to do. I was hooked. The logic, the problem-solving, the power to build something from scratch – it lit a fire in me that never went out. All I wanted to do was learn more, type faster, and figure out what else this incredible machine could do.
Two Decades in the Digital Trenches
That initial spark led me down a path far from gift wrap and greeting cards. I dove headfirst into technology, spending the next twenty-plus years immersed in the world of Information Technology. I navigated complex systems, managed large-scale IT projects, and learned the ins and outs of how technology can drive efficiency and solve problems on a corporate scale. It was challenging, rewarding, and taught me invaluable lessons about planning, execution, and the power of well-implemented systems.
Coming Full Circle: From BASIC to AI for Main Street
But throughout my corporate IT career, the memory of those Hallmark stores, the understanding of the small business owner’s grind, never faded. And as technology evolved at lightning speed, culminating in the incredible advancements we now see with Artificial Intelligence (AI), I realized something profound.
The same sense of wonder I felt coaxing "Hello World" from that Tandy 1000, that feeling of unlocking potential, is magnified a thousand times over with today's AI tools. And the people who stand to benefit most from this accessible power are the very small business owners like my father – the ones wearing countless hats, striving to connect with customers, and navigating an increasingly complex digital world.
That’s why I founded Breakthru Agency AI. It’s the culmination of my journey: combining the deep appreciation for the challenges of small business, gained stocking those shelves years ago, with decades of hands-on technology experience. My goal isn't to overwhelm you with complex tech jargon; it's to bridge the gap. It's to take these powerful AI tools – tools that can automate marketing, enhance customer engagement, and free up your valuable time – and make them practical, affordable, and effective for your business.
It feels like coming home, in a way. Instead of stocking cards, I'm helping businesses like the ones I grew up around stock their toolkits for future success. That "Hello World" moment was just the beginning; now, I want to help your business say "Hello" to a brighter, AI-powered future.
